Just like the general human development, the development of musical abilities covers the whole span of life from prenatal experience to old age. For this reason, research on musical ability has to be related to the whole lifespan.
Musical abilities develop in interaction with other aspects of personality. Therefore, the research on musical abilities requires a holistic perspective, which takes into account the interactiions between musical development, personality and general socio-cultural issues.
Musical abilities appear in various music styles and cultures. The Intitute of Research on Musical Ability investigates the cultural pluralism of musical ability.
General music education and the promotion of excellence are two sides of the same coin. Therefore, IBFM aims to link both fields in research and practice.
