Research and Teaching Group „Philosophy and Informatics

Profile:

The Research and Teaching Group „Philosophy and Informatics“ at the University Paderborn, was founded and is directed by Ruth Hagengruber, Professor of Philosophy at the University Paderborn.

Philosophical contributions concerning questions of knowledge and information can be traced back to the philosophical beginnings in Plato and Aristotle. Questions how to formalize and how to compute insights and knowledge of the world is part of philosophical research since ancient times. Since the start of Artificial Intelligence philosophy contributes towards a fruitful cooperation with Informatics.

The research group “Philosophy and Informatics” focuses on the interchange between information theory, ontology research, cognitive sciences and informatics. The members of the research group deal with questions about the computability of actions in social contexts as well as questions on typing, implementation and modeling of options for action in general.

Issues of research:

  • Action Theory
  • Ontology of Action
  • History of Artificial Intelligence and Philosophy
  • Philosophy of Mind

This year’s highlight of the research activities was the annual conference of the International Association of Computing and Philosophy (IACAP), from July 4th to July 6th, organized by Charles Ess, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Aarhus/Denmark. Charles Ess and Ruth Hagengruber presented the Proceedings: The Computational Turn: Past, Presents, Futures.
Hagengruber argued in her lecture in favour of “The Engineerability of Social Institutions”. Based on the theories of Immanuel Kant and criticizing the pragmatic approach of John Searle, the lecture discussed the possibility of computable representations of social institutions, such as “promises”. Thomas Dasch, member of the research group “Philosophy and Informatics”, focused in his presentation “Do We Need an Universal Information Ethics?” on possibilities of defining information ethics by a classification of options for action.
During the conference, at which time the 25th anniversary of the association was celebrated, Hagengruber was awarded for her efforts with the lifetime membership of the International Association of Computing and Philosophy. Terrell W. Bynum, Professor of Philosophy at the Southern Connecticut State University, a co-founder of the Association, received the Preston Covey Lifetime Achievement Award for his lifework within the field of Computing
and Philosophy.
