RESEARCH AT THE BORDERS OF MUSIC AND CULTURE
Call for Presentations for the Third IASPM-D-A-CH Collegium Musicum Populare and the Second

Annual Student Conference for Music Research by IASPM Benelux/KVNM June 2, 2017 – University of Amsterdam

On June 2nd 2017, the second IASPM Benelux/KVNM annual Student Conference for Music Research and the third IASPM-D-A-CH Collegium Musicum Populare will join forces and come together at the University of Amsterdam. The event will offer a series of panels led and presented by students at all levels of their academic careers. At the end of the day, we will also award the prize for the winners of the BA and MA Popular Music Thesis Award, organized and presented by IASPM Benelux and KVNM. Before the ceremony this year’s winning students will provide a summary of their research. Finally, we will enjoy a keynote by a reputed music scholar from the Benelux or D-A-CH region. We will complete our day with drinks and appetizers in a nearby location to the humanities department in the University of Amsterdam.

PAPER PRESENTATIONS

We invite students representing all levels from the BA to the PhD to participate in this conjoint conference. This year we highlight the role that music performs in contemporary society, in all of its diversity and breadth. We encourage presentations covering a broad range of subjects and from a variety of fields. We intentionally reject strict disciplinary and/or genre boundaries, as one of the primary goals of this conference is to allow students greater contact with each across categories such as art music and popular music. We also encourage and welcome a number of perspectives and methodologies from musicological and ethnomusicological to music industry and economic based studies. Finally, we welcome students who are particularly motived to blur boundaries between established methodologies in their research. In this sense, we hope to strengthen the contributions of new ways of examining classical and popular music scholarship in the Benelux and German speaking academic world. Ultimately, we hope to share insights with each other to promote greater contact between our various specializations and to make visible the important role that all forms of music research perform for culture and society.
