L.008.32490     Differentiation in primary schools

Catering for diverse student needs is notoriously difficult indeed. After a short revision of the issues at stake we will, therefore, analyse recent textbooks for young learners and discuss their differentiation pools. A premium will be placed on students designing differentiated activities themselves.
Focussing on young learners aged between eight and twelve, this course will predominatly but not exclusively deal with primary school English.

This seminar will introduce students to the basics of primary school English on a conceptual and practical level. We will do so by applying our readings of English in the Primary School to Sunshine 3 (2017 edition).

    Speaking and meditation

There is a general consensus among teachers and researchers that speaking is the competence. In recent years, however, mediation (Sprachmittlung) has also attracted increasing attention. A good many sessions of this seminar will, therefore, be devoted to these issues:

  • Speaking and mediation as communicative competences
  • Skills development in speaking and mediation classes
  • Effective speaking and mediation activities
  • Speaking, mediation, and assessment

L.008.32450 Förderung und Diagnose (Grundschule)

Catering for diverse student needs is notoriously difficult indeed. After a short revision of the issues at stake (diagnosis and heterogeneity) we will, therefore, analyse recent textbooks for young learners and discuss their differentiation pools. Moreover, we will focus on authentic texts produced by young learners and discuss individual support and feedback for them. Master copies of textbooks will be provided.
