Prüfungsordnung Master Anglistisch-Amerikanistische Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft (2012 in English and American Studies umbenannt worden).

The Program

The Master’s program English and American Studies combines literary with cultural studies. Courses are offered in the field of literature, ranging from medieval Old English and Middle English literature to contemporary English and Americanliterature. In the field of cultural studies, courses deal with popular culture and the visual arts, focusing on the analysis of media such as photography, art, film, and music as well as their broader historical contexts. Additionally, students are required to attend language courses that are specifically geared towards the master level. The program also contains a “Studium Generale” module, in which students can choose academic courses from all faculties and departments of the University of Paderborn. The program also features an internship module, in which students have to complete a six-week internship in an English-speaking country, in order to explore an occupational field of their choice. Students will also teach a tutorial accompanying a B.A. course in the field of English or American literature or culture so that they can effectively gain experience in teaching at the university level. Finally, students spend one semester studying in an English-speaking country. The course of studies generally lasts four semesters and is designed for Bachelor graduates who have majored in English or American Studies. Students who have completed their degree in related fields are also welcome to apply; depending on their background in English and American Studies, they might have to complete additional courses before beginning the program. As all courses offered by the Department of English and American Studies are taught in English, knowledge of German is not required. The degree will prepare you for an academic career (Ph.D./ Promotion), as well as for a wide variety of occupations in the public sector, such as in publishing, journalism, and media.
