Take a Look in the Black Mirror – Investigating the Didactic Potential of Dystopian TV Shows

Often times, the topic ‘Visions of the Future – Utopia and Dystopia’ as part of the A-levels in North-Rhine Westphalia (QUA-LiS NRW) is taught using novels from the past century, such as Huxley’s Brave New World or Orwell’s 1984. While these classics have rightfully earned their place in the EFL classroom, one could argue that our present-day society has more than enough dystopian features that are worth discussing with our students – zeroing in on both contemporary topics and modern media. Therefore, my PhD focuses on investigating the didactic potential of TV Shows such as Netflix’s Black Mirror as a means to teach the pressing issues of the 21st century: social media addiction, the climate crisis, and many more. By applying qualitative methods, an empirical study will determine whether students are able to better reflect on the dystopian aspects of today’s society when approaching the topic area through the lens of contemporary media.

Häufig wird das Thema ‚Visions of the Future – Utopia and Dystopia‘ im Rahmen des nordrhein-westfälischen Abiturs (QUA-LiS NRW) anhand von Romanen aus dem vergangenen Jahrhundert, wie Huxleys Brave New World oder Orwells 1984, unterrichtet. Während diese Klassiker zu Recht ihren Platz im Englischunterricht verdient haben, ließe sich argumentieren, dass unsere heutige Gesellschaft mehr als genug dystopische Charakteristika aufweist, die es wert sind, mit unseren SchülerInnen diskutiert zu werden - sowohl mit Blick auf aktuelle Themen als auch auf moderne Medien. Daher konzentriert sich mein Promotionsprojekt auf die Untersuchung des didaktischen Potenzials von Fernsehserien wie Netflix‘ Black Mirror als Mittel zur Vermittlung der Probleme des 21. Jahrhunderts: Social Media Sucht, der Klimakrise und vielem mehr. Durch die Anwendung qualitativer Methoden soll in einer empirischen Studie ermittelt werden, ob die SchülerInnen in der Lage sind, die Probleme der gegenwärtigen Gesellschaft besser zu reflektieren, wenn sie sich dem Themenbereich durch die Linse der zeitgenössischen Medien nähern.
