SUSTAIN, the Journal for Sustaining Music Education, understands research as a social contribution that explicitly addresses current and future problems and contributes to their solution. For this reason, SUSTAIN promotes the discussion in music education about a sustainable and participatory society as well as cultural diversity. In addition, the formulation of possible implications for the future is actively encouraged in order to contribute to a theoretical and empirical foundation of futures studies in music education.

As an editorial board, we aim to critically question publication and review formats as well as questions of publication ethics on an ongoing basis, to connect with social and technological transformations, and to contribute to a global and accessible representation of knowledge. 

SUSTAIN combines contemporary music education research with the construction of possible futures. The journal thus addresses music educators from different contexts (e.g. school, music school and higher education, cultural education, research...) and those interested in learning and educational perspectives on music cultures from other disciplines, including futurology, popular music research, biographical research, media research and discourse research. An interdisciplinary perspective on music education at the interfaces of music pedagogy, music/cultural studies and futurology will be presented.

The aim is

• to analyse current trends in music cultures in the context of changing political, economic, technological and social conditions,
• relate these to current conceptualisations of music education and educational theory,
• to envision possible futures for music cultures, including learning and educational cultures,
• and to promote innovative practices and approaches that build bridges between music education and other disciplines and contribute to shaping a sustainable future.

We are committed to a review process that is based on solidarity and contributes constructively to the scientific quality of the submissions.
The submissions therefore undergo an open peer review process. Two expert peers review the submissions. The identities of the authors and the reviewers remain visible during the process. This allows the authors and reviewers to engage in an exchange in order to collaboratively improve the quality of the contribution.

Furthermore, we see global accessibility of knowledge as our mission.
Publication is exclusively online, free of charge and openly accessible without the need for registration and under a CC BY 4.0 license.
