Zusammenfassung des Forschungsvorhabens

Ziel des beantragten Projekts ist die Ermittlung geeigneter Indikatoren für historischen Textmusterwandel anhand einschlägiger Textsorten der Gebrauchsliteratur der jüngeren Sprachgeschichte. Trotz ihrer sprachhistorischen Bedeutung erfolgten Untersuchungen zum Textmusterwandel innerhalb der betrachteten Textsorten bislang nur auf sehr schmaler Materialgrundlage. Deshalb soll ein im Rahmen der Vorarbeiten entworfenes Modell zur Erfassung von Textmusterwandel systematisch korpusbasiert erprobt und weiterentwickelt werden.

Das hier zugrundeliegende mehrdimensionale Modell bezieht die Ergebnisse bisheriger Forschung hinsichtlich textkonstitutiver sprachlicher Indizien ein. Diese sollen im Projekt an einer breiten Materialgrundlage überprüft und das Modell dabei so operationalisiert werden, dass automatische und manuelle Textanalyse sowie quantitative und qualitative Auswertung ineinandergreifen und sich wechselseitig informieren.

In den Blick genommen werden dabei konkret die musterhaften Ausprägungen der textstrukturellen, thematischen, funktionalen, sozialen und stilistischen Dimension. Da diese Dimensionen zum großen Teil von der textlichen Oberfläche aus ermittelbar sind, kann dabei weitgehend auf Analyseergebnisse computerlinguistischer Software zurückgegriffen werden. Zur Erschließung weiterer Merkmale, die bislang nicht zuverlässig durch automatische Verfahren bestimmt werden können (zumal für historische Textsorten), ist zudem eine manuelle Annotation vorgesehen. Die Ergebnisse der statistischen Auswertung sollen in Rückbindung an die Quellen interpretiert und qualifiziert werden.

Zugrunde gelegt werden Textsorten der Presseliteratur einerseits  und der Erbauungsliteratur andererseits und damit zwei verschiedene Genres, die in den jeweiligen Untersuchungszeiträumen einen festen Sitz im Leben breiter Rezipientenkreise hatten. Durch die Verschiedenheit der untersuchten Korpora sind profunde Aussagen zu Erscheinungsformen des Textmusterwandels möglich, wodurch die Anwendbarkeit der im Projekt entwickelten Verfahren für die Untersuchung weiterer Textsorten gewährleistet wird.

The Evolution of complex Text Patterns:
Development of a corpus-linguistic Approach for Analysis of Diachronic Change of Text Patterns in its Multidimensionality

Project Summary

The project proposed here targets the identification of the key indicators for diachronic change of text patterns based on two highly relevant text genres of recent language history. Despite its considerable importance for the history of language, so far diachronic change of text patterns has only been examined on very thin text bases, particularly for the text types under consideration here. Therefore, in the course of preliminary work we developed a model for the description of diachronic change of text patterns, which can now be systematically tested, adjusted, and further developed in a corpus-based approach.

For this underlying multi-dimensional model, we considered existing research results on linguistic indicators for the constitution of text. These named indicators are to be verified on a large text basis in the course of the proposed project. In doing so, the proposed model will be operationalised in a way that automatic and manual text analysis as well as quantitative and qualitative examination intertwine and mutually inform one another.

More specifically, patterns of the structural, functional, social, and stylistic dimension of texts are to be considered systematically, here. Considering, that patterns of these dimensions can be extracted from the textual surface, for this task we can draw on results of computational linguistic analysis tools. In addition, it is planned to apply manual annotation wherever features cannot be reliably extracted with automatic methods, yet (especially for historical texts). The extracted features will be object to statistical analysis and the results of this quantitative analysis are then to be verified and interpreted in a qualitative approach based on the actual text sources.

The work will be based on press literature on the one hand, and devotional literature on the other hand, thus including two genres which formed a strong part of every day’s life for a wide range of recipients in their time. The variety of the corpora under consideration is expected to lead to profound results on the manifestations of diachronic change of text patterns in general, hence ensuring the applicability of approaches gained from the project for the analysis of further text types.
