Kon­fe­renz: The Orig­ins of To­ta­li­ta­ri­a­nism To­day. From the Cri­ses of De­mo­cra­cy to New Be­gin­nings

Als Hannah Arendts „The Origins of Totalitarianism“ 1951 erstmals erschien, wurde es weithin als das erste Werk gefeiert, das eine systematische Konzeptualisierung der politischen Katastrophe bot, welche die Grundlagen der europäischen Zivilisation in den vorangegangenen Jahrzehnten gefährdet hatte. 75 Jahre nach seiner Erstveröffentlichung zieht das Buch nach wie vor sowohl akademisches als auch ein nicht-akademisches Publikum an. In vielerlei Hinsicht ist „The Origins“ der Inbegriff des erneuten Interesses an der aktuellen Relevanz von Arendts Denken: Nach Donald Trumps erster Wahl zum Präsidenten in 2016, wurden „The Origins of Totalitarianism“ wieder zum internationalen Bestseller. Angesichts der weit verbreiteten Befürchtung, dass wir in eine neue Ära autoritärer Herrschaft, wenn nicht gar des Totalitarismus im eigentlichen Sinne abgleiten, ist das Verständnis der Ursprünge und Elemente dessen, was Arendt als „totale Herrschaft“ bezeichnete, nach wie vor von größter politischer Bedeutung und von zentraler Relevanz für das demokratische Projekt. Im Rahmen dieser Konferenz diskutieren wir, was an Arendts Werk heute politisch und philosophisch wichtig ist. 

When Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism was first published in 1951, it was widely hailed as the first work to offer a systematic conceptualization of the political catastrophe that had menaced European civilization in the preceding decades. 75 years after its first publication, the book continues to attract both academic and non-academic readership. In many ways, The Origins is the epitome of the surge of interest towards the contemporary relevance of Arendt’s thinking. It is telling that in 2016, following Donald Trump’s first election as president, The Origins became an international bestseller once again. In the face of widespread fear that we are sliding into a new era of authoritarian rule, if not totalitarianism proper, understanding the origins and elements of what Arendt called ‘total domination’ continues to be of foremost political importance and central to the democratic project. In this conference we discuss the political and philosophical relevance of The Origins of Totalitarianism today.
