Welcome to C:POP Research Centre
The C:POP - Transdisciplinary Research Centre for Popular Music Cultures and Creative Economies is an interdisciplinary research institution at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Paderborn University. Founded in 2023, the centre is dedicated to the transdisciplinary analysis of popular music and its interactions with social, cultural and economic processes.
We invite you to visit our website to find out about current research projects, events and publications and look forward to engaging in dialogue with you.
Our research understands transdisciplinarity as "transclusion" - a mutually inclusive interplay between different academic and non-academic knowledge cultures. We thus aim to promote cooperation between academic and non-academic actors in research, teaching and knowledge transfer. It aims to open up diverse spaces for the exchange and reflection of current topics in pop music culture research/popular music studies and thus actively contribute to the relevant current discourse in academia, media, journalism and society. We work closely with stakeholders from the music industry, cultural policy, the media and civil society in order to shed light on relevant issues from different perspectives.
All about C:POP
C:POP deals with the many facets of pop culture and pop music - from their social meanings and economic dynamics to questions of identity, gender and participation. The aim is to make pop visible not only as entertainment, but also as a cultural and scientific field of research. As a transdisciplinary research centre, C:POP brings together science, art and the public. With lectures, discussions, performances and collaborations, a space is created in which pop, culture and society are not only researched, but also thought about together.
News
The C:POP Research Centre investigates how music and society interact, which aesthetic trends emerge and which political and social discourses pop music triggers.
Pop is also an important economic factor. C:POP therefore analyses the creative economies of music, festivals, media and fashion. What business models are emerging, how are digital platforms changing the industry and what does the future of the creative industries look like?
