On 12 November, the famous music journalist, presenter and author Markus Kavka will once again be a guest at Paderborn University.
After Kavka held the first two “Popdozenturen” (pop lectureships) in the "Popular Music and Media" degree programmes in 2014 and 2016 and worked with students in seminars alongside talks and DJ performances, he is now back in Paderborn with his book "Markus Kavka on Depeche Mode" at the invitation of the "C:POP. Transdisciplinary Research Centre for Popular Music Cultures and Creative Economies".
Kavka is one of the best-known German music television journalists of the last 30 years (VIVA, MTV, RBB, Rock am Ring) and has interviewed numerous superstars such as Kylie Minogue, Nick Cave, Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn Manson, Mariah Carey, Metallica and especially often and intensively the world stars Depeche Mode, about whom he has also written his book "Markus Kavka über Depeche Mode".
By invitation of the seminar "Post Punk, New Wave and Synthie Pop: Subcultures, Mainstreams, Gender and Zeitgeister" by Prof. Dr. Christoph Jacke, an open talk with students and guests will take place in the afternoon from 2 to 4 pm in H7.321 at the university, in which (pop music) culture, media and political meanings of the late seventies and early eighties will be discussed with Markus Kavka as a music journalist, presenter and DJ. As Kavka has repeatedly explored genres such as new wave, synth pop, post punk and gothic alongside heavy metal and interviewed many protagonists. References from this time to the revivals of the noughties and twenties will also be discussed.
The event at UPB is open to public and free.
From 7.30 to 9.30 pm on the same day, Kavka will then read about Depeche Mode, with whom he has built up a knowledgeable relationship as a fan and journalist over the years, at Paderborn's Deelenhaus. In a classic reading, Kavka combines humorous, autobiographically coloured observations with songs by the band, videos, private photos and excerpts from interviews he has conducted with the band himself. The result is a multimedia evening between nostalgia, pop history and a very personal fan perspective.
