Study Popular Music and Media
Although popular music and media have had a decisive influence on the cultural history of the 20th and 21st centuries, their academic research has long been neglected in German-speaking countries. While specialised study programmes and research approaches have emerged internationally since the 1980s, pop music culture research in Germany continues to face major challenges. There are still only a few programmes that take an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach to pop culture in all its facets - from performance, studio work and events to media, fan cultures and artistic practices.
This is where the unique Bachelor's and Master's degree programme "Popular Music and Media" comes in, which has been building a bridge between academic research and practical application for over 20 years. Students acquire in-depth knowledge in the fields of pop, music, media, business and culture and at the same time gain practical experience in the music and media world - for example through artist coaching, excursions, self-organised festivals or co-teaching on topics such as sustainability, gender, A.I. or journalism. The aim is to train reflective practitioners and practical theorists who can critically analyse, apply and shape music and media cultures, from songs and stars to technologies, games and films, and thus position themselves academically and professionally in a targeted manner.
Overview
Popular music and media as a university degree programme
The academic study of pop culture has long been neglected in German-speaking countries. While specialised studies and degree programmes emerged internationally at an early stage, the targeted institutionalisation of pop music culture research in Germany only began over 20 years ago at Paderborn University. With the "Popular Music and Media" degree programme (BA/MA/PhD) founded in 2002 and the "PopMediaCulture - German-Latin American Cultural Mediation" Master's programme, which has been running since 2022, Paderborn still offers a unique education in Germany today. The programmes combine cultural studies, practical media and business management content, promote a deep understanding of the cultural, media and social dimensions of pop culture and prepare students to act competently, creatively and responsibly in the music and media industry.
General information
Popular music and media have had a significant impact on the cultural history of the 20th century. However, corresponding academic reflection has long been neglected in German-speaking countries. While internationally there have been interdisciplinary study programmes in the field of popular music and media for some time, in Germany the institutionalisation of popular music research has only just begun. In fact, there are still few study programmes in which a comprehensive and systematic examination of the phenomenon takes place. You either study music or media - and then you are far from studying pop. The Bachelor's and Master's degree programme "Popular Music and Media", which is unique in Germany to date, forms an interface between academic reflection and professional practice. By acquiring academic skills on the one hand and gaining practical experience in music and media on the other, students will have the opportunity to develop into reflective practitioners and experienced theorists.
