Information concerning the time abroad in the Bachelor of Education programme

The stay abroad is described as follows in accordance with § 36 (2) of the special provisions of the examination regulations:

“Das Studium des Unterrichtsfaches Englisch umfasst einen Auslandsaufenthalt von mindestens drei Monaten Dauer in einem entsprechenden Land der Zielsprache. Der Auslandsaufenthalt darf in maximal drei vierwöchigen Einzelaufenthalten nachgewiesen werden. Der Auslandsaufenthalt kann beispielsweise in Form von Studium, Praktika, Sprachaufenthalt oder Arbeit für eine karitative Organisation erbracht werden.”

This roughly translates to:

The study programme in English as a teaching subject includes a stay abroad of at least three months in a corresponding country of the target language. The stay abroad may be documented in a maximum of three four-week individual stays. The stay abroad can take the form of study, internships, language study or work for a charitable organisation, for example. (Be aware: the legal document is the German language version!)

Advice on the time abroad is available during the office hours of Dr. Markus Freudinger.

It is your own responsibility to start planning your stay abroad early on in your degree.

According to the examination regulations, you can spend the stay abroad in a corresponding country of the target language. The target language is English. If you are unsure whether your target country is suitable, please discuss this with Dr Markus Freudinger before the start of your stay.

These activities are fully recognised:

  • Study abroad in an English-speaking country
  • Internship in an English-speaking country with a direct connection to the degree programme/subject combination, in particular internships in educational institutions
  • Foreign language assistant (PAD) in an English-speaking country
  • Language courses in an English-speaking country
  • Volunteer work in an English-speaking country
  • Au pair in an English-speaking country
  • Full-time work in an English-speaking country

In the cases mentioned above, a stay abroad can be recognised without further consultation in advance. The prerequisite for recognition is a transparent documentation of the stay.

In addition to the above-mentioned cases, other ways of spending the time abroad are possible. In these cases, consultation with Dr Markus Freudinger is absolutely necessary before the start of the time abroad.

Going abroad can be very expensive, but they does not have to be. If financial worries are preventing you from planning your time abroad, seek advice from Dr Markus Freudinger during his office hours.

You can find information on funding opportunities on the Faculty of Arts and Humanities website. However, not all forms of spending your time abroad are eligible for funding.

The stay abroad is part of the degree programme and should therefore take place during the Bachelor of Education degree programme. In some cases, longer stays abroad immediately before the start of the degree programme can be recognised.

Important: Without a completed stay abroad, you will not receive a degree for the Bachelor of Education study programme with English as a teaching subject and cannot switch to the Master of Education. It is not possible to "defer" to the Master's programme.

It is of course possible for you to take a leave of absence for the duration of your stay abroad. Details on leave of absence can be found on the Student Services website.

You can have the necessary form signed by either Dr Markus Freudinger or Anke Riebau.

Please do not forget to have your stay abroad confirmed in writing (not by e-mail) by an official body in the host country (e.g. the host university, host family, employer, etc.). The confirmation must state where you were, how long you were there and what you did there.

If you are studying English in combination with French or Spanish, a stay abroad is also required for these subjects. In this case, be sure to seek advice before your time abroad.

In cases of hardship, it is possible to replace the stay abroad with equivalent activities. This mainly concerns studying with a disability or the compatibility of studying and care work. We recommend you discuss your individual situation in person with Dr Markus Freudinger.

Your time abroad must be credited in PAUL. This is possible once you have completed the stay abroad for the full duration of at least three months. To do this, register in PAUL for the stay abroad (module, course, activity). If you experience any (technical) difficulties with the registration, please contact the Academic Advisory Office KW.

Upload all relevant documents (certificates, confirmations, travel documents, etc.) that make the stay transparent in the corresponding PANDA course. Inform Dr Markus Freudinger via e-mail about the upload.
