Coulda, shoulda, woulda

Are the forms mentioned above really only contractions that are represented in writing as eye dialects (Krapp 1926) accordingly? Or can we measure functional differences between the contracted forms (e.g. coulda) and the corresponding full forms (e.g. could have)? If so, can we interpret these differences as an early step in a cline of grammaticalization (Hopper/Traugott 1993)? These questions will be addressed using data from current corpora.

Handelt es sich bei den genannten Formen wirklich nur um Kontrahierungen, die in der Schreibung als eye-dialects (Krapp 1926) entsprechend dargestellt werden? Oder gibt es messbare funktionale Unterschiede zwischen den Kurzformen (z.B. coulda) und ihren Vollformen (could have)? Falls ja, handelt es sich um einen frühen Schritt in einem Grammatikalisierungsprozess (Hopper/Traugott 1993)? Zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen werden aktuelle Korpusdaten herangezogen.

COME TO

A detailed corpus study shows that COME TO can be either followed by nominal or by verbal elements. If followed by nominal elements, TO is assigned the status of a preposition. If verbs follow, TO is analysed as a to-infinitive marker. This study investigates the occurrences of COME TO V as to their function and meaning from a diachronic as well as a Modern English point of view. The aim is to add new insight to the grammatical description of English.

Eine detaillierte korpusgestützte Untersuchung zeigt, dass nach COME TO entweder Nomen oder von Verben folgen. Wenn Nomen folgen, dann wird TO als Präposition analysiert. Folgen hingegen Verben, ist TO als sogenannter to-infinitive marker zu analysieren. In dieser Untersuchung werden die Vorkommen von COME TO V in Bezug auf ihre Funktion sowie Bedeutung erforscht. Neben einer diachronen Analyse steht auch eine Beschreibung im Modernen Englisch im Vordergrund. Das Ziel dieser Studie ist eine detailliertere Beschreibung der Grammatik des Englischen.

Adjective complementation by that-clauses

This is the first empirical study to focus on adjectives complemented by that-clauses. The in-depth analysis of more than 50,000 cases taken from the British National Corpus gives comprehensive insight into hitherto neglected relations of lexis and grammar. The result of this corpus-driven study is a novel classification of adjectives based on co-occurrence patterns and which are corroborated with the help of statistical means. Corpus-driven descriptions covered in this study include well-known phenomena of English grammar, such as extraposition or the resultative construction so…that.

Dies ist die erste empirische Untersuchung von Adjektiven, welche von that-Sätzen komplementiert werden. Diese detaillierte Untersuchung von mehr als 50.000 Fällen aus dem British National Corpus stellt die bisher wenig beachtete Beziehungen zwischen der Lexis und der Grammatik dar. Das Ergebnis dieser auf einer induktiven Analyse der Daten gewonnenen Untersuchung ist eine neue Klassifikation von Adjektiven, die auf Ko-Okkurrenzen aufbaut und durch statistische Verfahren gestützt ist. Bekannte Phänomene der englischen Grammatik wie Extraposition oder resultative so… that-Sätze sind Teil der Untersuchung.
