Paderborn University Alumni

Would you like to stay connected to your alma mater after leaving Paderborn University and be kept up to date on the latest developments and offers for you? Then you are very welcome to register in the Paderborn University alumni database!

Terminate apartment (website only available in German)

Terminate your apartment in Paderborn in due time. Please pay particular attention to the deadlines specified in your rental contract for this purpose (in most cases these are 3 months).

If necessary, arranging an appointment to hand over the apartment keys

You should arrange an appointment to hand over the apartment keys (”Schlüsselübergabetermin“) with your landlord and take a handover protocol with you to this appointment. This protocol certifies the proper handover of the apartment and records the meter readings (electricity, water, gas). Here you can find templates for a handover protocol of the tenants' association (Mieterbund) and the association for tenants’ protection (Mieterschutzbund):

You should also arrange the repayment of the rent deposit at an early stage.

Cancel insurances

If necessary, cancel your German health insurance in time. Please pay particular attention to the cancellation deadlines specified in your contract with the provider.

If necessary, canceling contracts

Other contracts, e.g. for electricity and gas, telephone, gym, etc. should also be cancelled in time.

If necessary, clarification of pension claims

If you were employed at Paderborn University under a contract of employment subject to social security contributions, you should contact the German Pension Insurance and the Federal and State Pension Institution (VBL) to find out whether you have acquired pension claims.

Closing your bank account

If you have an account with a German bank and would like to close it, you should make sure that all necessary payments (automatic bill payments, salary, scholarship, etc.) are still received or processed beforehand.

If necessary, deregistration from kindergarden/school

If your children have attended a daycare center, kindergarden or school in Germany, please inform the childcare/educational facilities about your move in good time. You can get help and support with this from the Family Services Office.

If necessary, applying for a change-of-address order (Nachsendeauftrag)

You can apply to Deutsche Post for a change-of-address order (Nachsendeauftrag) (website only available in German) so that your mail is automatically sent to your new address.

Deregistration from the city

If you have been staying in Germany for a longer period of time and have registered with the Residents' Registration Office, you should deregister (website only available in German) from the city no later than two weeks after your move abroad. If you move within Germany, it is sufficient to register at the registration office of your new place of residence.

If necessary, deregister with the Foreigners’ Registration Office

Deregister yourself (and, if applicable, any accompanying family members) with the Foreigner’s Registration Office.

If necessary, deregistration from the broadcasting fee service (Rundfunkbeitragsservice)

If you have paid broadcasting fees, you should deregister online (website only available in German). You will usually need a deregistration certificate or a new registration certificate from the Residents' Registration Office.

If necessary, preparation of a tax return

If you have paid taxes in Germany, you have the option of digitally submitting (website only available in German) an application for wage tax equalization to the Paderborn tax office (website only available in German).

If necessary, contacting the Human Resources Department

If you have been employed at the Paderborn University, please contact the Human Resources Department before you leave.
