The "New Voices Online Talk Series" of the "Centre for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists" at Paderborn University is dedicated to the topic of "Women's Ideas in the History of Medicine", i.e. the significant contributions of women to medical knowledge in history.
In her lecture on Wednesday 14 May, Viktorya Vasilyan will talk about the history of breastfeeding, its iconography and medical significance. Vasilyan has a doctorate in history and works as a researcher and head of the Department of Scientific Organisation at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia (NAS RA). She is also a lecturer at the University of Traditional Medicine in Armenia.
The subject of the discussion in the online series is the influence of women on medical practice from late antiquity to the Renaissance and beyond. The lectures will cover topics such as ancient gynaecology, early Islamic medical texts, the role of midwives and poetic representations of reproductive experiences, offering a comprehensive insight into the intersection of gender and the history of medicine.
