25-26 July 2025, Paderborn University
Deadline: 25 April 2025
The Collegium Musicum Populare (CMP) is a regular workshop of the German-speaking branch of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM D-A-CH), which promotes professional and personal exchange between students, graduates, doctoral candidates, post-docs and professors in the broad field of Popular Music Studies. Here we exchange ideas on ongoing projects - be it theses, doctoral dissertations, post-doctoral theses or research projects. The whole event is inter-generational, inter-disciplinary and multi-perspective. Presenters are cordially invited to present their 'work in progress' as part of an open-ended and protected symposium. Inclusivity and open discussions at eye level are important here. Students and doctoral candidates also have the opportunity to take part in the CMP without making their own contribution.
Impressions from previous years can be found here.
Further information on the IASPM D-A-CH can be found here.
News from research: Theories, methods and perspectives
A central feature of Popular Music Studies is the demand for the ideal of a holistic view of music. Accordingly, the CMP analyses musical, media, social, psychological, economic, technological, historical, political and many other aspects of popular music cultures. Accordingly, the field of research is characterised by different prerequisites, perspectives, focal points, phenomena, approaches, procedures and objectives. The CMP offers a confidential and protected inter- and transdisciplinary platform for reflecting on and discussing current research perspectives - also in direct link to the presentation of one's own research project and aspects of operationalisation - based on different experiences.
On both days of the CMP, we will meet during the day for presentations and discussions. On Friday, 25 July 2025, we will also discuss career paths in popular music studies. On Saturday, 26 July 2025, we will close the CMP 2025 with a round table of all participants to reflect on insights from the presentations and look ahead.
We are looking forward to receiving proposals for presentations (25 minutes presentation + 20 minutes discussion) with the following information:
- Title
- Abstract of max. 250 words
- five keywords that concretise the content of the planned contribution
- in a separate file: Name, academic affiliation if applicable, contact information and short biography (2-3 sentences)
In order to make the feedback from the plenary more targeted and productive and to be able to categorise the project in the context and progress, the presenters should address the following questions:
- What project are you presenting (thesis, doctoral dissertation, individual presentation/essay, side project, etc.), how far along is it and where are you right now?
- What in particular do you need feedback on? E.g. on the structure of the project/written work, on individual terms/theories/models, on the research question, on operationalisation, on the method (selection, design, implementation, data analysis, etc.), on the linguistic presentation?
For binding participation without your own contribution, please send an e-mail to the address below with your name, academic affiliation (if applicable), contact information and short biography (2-3 sentences).
Proposals for speeches or registration for participation without your own contribution should be sent by e-mail as an open text file to cmp2025@mail.uni-paderborn.de by 25 April 2025. The applicants will be informed about the acceptance of the proposals by mid-May 2025.
Membership of IASPM D-A-CH is not required. Participation is free of charge, but the number of places is limited. Entries will be selected anonymously. We sponsor travel expenses for students and doctoral candidates to a limited extent. In the spirit of the workshop idea, participants are expected to be present on both days.
In anticipation of the exchange with you and you remain with best regards
