Every year, around 7,500 titles are published on the German-language children's and young adult book market. Prof Dr Iris Kruse from the Institute of German Language and Comparative Literature at Paderborn University is the chair of the jury of critics for the German Youth Literature Prize and has the task of selecting the best works. The winners will be announced at the Frankfurt Book Fair on Friday, 18 October. The prize, which is endowed with a total of 72,000 euros, is sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and organised by the Working Group for Young People's Literature.

In addition to the chairperson, the nine-member jury team consists of two experts each from the categories of picture books, children's books, young adult books and non-fiction. 658 new publications were submitted for the German Youth Literature Award 2024, which were viewed and independently reviewed by the honorary jury of critics. ‘We honour books that are outstanding in terms of the aesthetic quality of their text and visual language. Books that use language and images to give their young readers new and profound experiences of their ‘being-in-the-world’ and that have the potential to make a lasting impression on young people's paths to self-awareness,’ explains Kruse, who will also moderate a panel discussion with the award winners on Saturday, 19 October.
