C:POP advisory board member Dr Bodo Mrozek visits UPB

In the summer semester, the well-known contemporary and pop historian Dr Bodo Mrozek was a guest at the UPB. The C:POP advisory board was invited as part of a cooperation between the centre and the Department of Contemporary History at the Institute of History. In front of an interested audience, Mrozek presented his own research on the topic of "Between popular education and nationalist formation: transnational nationalism in the youth music movement (1923-1967)". Mrozek gave a very stimulating and well-documented explanation of developments and conspicuous features of German music education publishers and National Socialist links in the so-called youth music movement in Germany. Mrozek described his research and reflections, which took him from youth movements and their political framing as well as their protagonists such as Rolf Gardiner or Fritz Jöde to the youth music movement in Germany, in a very memorable way and using numerous source materials. In the extensive discussion section that followed, Mrozek answered the questions of the interdisciplinary, curious audience, for example on the treatment of Jewish musicians or left-wing currents in the youth music movement, and made it clear that further research is urgently needed on these topics in order to show breaks, but above all continuities, which also emerge in the context of recent right-wing populist activities and in the publishing industry.
