WDR-Lokalzeit OWL reports on sustainable pilot project at the AStA summer festival in Paderborn

In a news report, WDR's Lokalzeit OWL programme reported on a Paderborn University research project that is being tested in practice for the first time at this year's AStA Summer Festival. The festival, one of the largest campus festivals in Germany, attracts around 14,000 visitors every year and also produces a lot of waste and CO₂ emissions.
The report focuses on the "NachhaltigkeitsKulturOWL" project, which is headed by Prof Dr Beate Flath. The aim is to find out how major cultural events can be made more environmentally friendly without compromising the festival character.
The reporters show that the research team not only collects data at the festival, but also tests practical measures - such as pocket ashtrays made from recycled PET, which are distributed to visitors. The aim is to prevent cigarette butts from littering the meadows and paths.
The Paderborn festival marks the start of a multi-year research series in East Westphalia-Lippe. Further stations are the Orange Blossom Special in Beverungen and the Carnival of Cultures in Bielefeld.
In its report, Lokalzeit OWL emphasises that the Paderborn project is an example of how science, culture and sustainability can work together. Through practical approaches such as the pocket ashtrays and information campaigns, sustainability is made concrete and tangible for festival visitors.
